Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common – and preventable – chronic conditions. There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), type 2 accounts for about 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases.
Prediabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. One in three U.S. adults has prediabetes. Prediabetes often goes undetected until serious health problems arise.
The good news? Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes can be prevented through some lifestyle changes:
- Move more: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, such as walking, swimming, or cycling.
- Eat well: Focus on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Avoid processed foods and sugary beverages.
- Monitor your blood sugar levels: Regular check-ups can help you monitor your blood sugar levels and stay on track.
- Maintain a healthy weight: Losing even a small amount of weight can significantly reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
