February Wellbeing Tip: Heart Disease

Heart disease is a broad term for conditions affecting the heart, most commonly Coronary Artery Disease. One of the most serious outcomes of heart disease is a heart attack. A heart attack occurs when the flow of blood to the heart is severely reduced or blocked. Managing heart disease risk factors by being active, eating healthy and not smoking helps prevent a heart attack, but if a blockage occurs, it's an emergency. Recognizing the warning signs could save a life.

Call 911 right away if you notice:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Pain in jaw, neck, back, arms, or shoulders
  • Shortness of breath
  • Extreme fatigue, lightheadedness, or fainting
  • Nausea or vomiting

Women are more likely to have ‘silent’ heart attacks without chest pain. Symptoms can include:

  • Anxiety
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea, vomiting, or upset stomach
  • Pain in shoulder, back, or arm
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness

Don’t ignore the signs. If you notice symptoms, call 911 or seek emergency care right away. Even if you’re unsure, it’s better to be safe. If you haven’t already, schedule an annual well visit with your primary care provider to discuss your heart health and risk factors. Taking this step today can help protect your future.
